I. Material Introduction

Paulownia has an air‑dry density of only 0.23–0.40 g/cm³, making it one of the lightest commercial woods in the world. Carbonisation extracts sugars and moisture from the wood, densifies its cellular structure, and significantly enhances its resistance to moisture, decay, and insects. The entire process uses no chemical additives, ensuring environmental friendliness and health safety. Paulownia raw material costs approximately RMB 2,200/m³; carbonisation adds some processing expense, but overall cost‑performance remains excellent.


II. Performance in Wooden Boxes

After carbonisation, paulownia shifts from its natural light beige to warm grey‑brown or dark brown, acquiring a natural vintage look with more pronounced grain patterns that evoke a sense of time‑honoured character. The treatment reduces moisture absorption, making the wood resistant to warping and deformation even in humid environments, thus safely protecting the contents. A natural protective film forms on the surface, yet the wood retains its breathability; the finish is fine, slightly matte, and becomes increasingly smooth and warm with use. At the same time, carbonisation removes nutrients such as sugars, fundamentally reducing the risk of insect infestation and mildew, while the surface is water‑repellent and stain‑resistant, making it easy to maintain.


III. Surface Finishing Techniques

Carbonisation itself is the core finishing process, and additional treatments can be applied on top: applying wood wax oil or clear varnish can enhance protection or adjust gloss; the dark base provides excellent contrast with lighter engraved or printed marks, making laser engraving, hot stamping, and screen printing particularly effective; antiquing or distressing can be added to reinforce the vintage aesthetic, suitable for cultural and creative products and intangible cultural heritage packaging.

Note: Carbonisation reduces nail‑holding strength; pre‑drilling is recommended during assembly. The carbonised layer is relatively fragile, so sharp objects should be avoided to prevent scratching.


Carbonised paulownia, forged through fire and wood, strikes a perfect balance between vintage charm and practicality-light, stable, smooth, and pure. It stands as a natural bridge between traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.
