Canada Poured C$500M Into Wood Exports — So Why Are They Tanking?

In H1 2026, Canadian softwood exports totaled 13.2 million m³, down 12% YoY, with export value falling 26% - despite a C$500 million government push for market diversification and industry transformation.

Exports to the U.S. dropped 13% (1.73 million m³), shrinking America's share to 89%. Six newly targeted offshore markets collectively recovered only about 4% of the U.S. loss, while overall non-U.S. markets actually declined 3%. China posted a 3% gain to 525,000 m³, but the volume is far too small to offset the U.S. shortfall.

On the domestic log front: On July 30, Xinminzhou Port radiata pine no-knot grades P30 and P40 surged 70 RMB/m³ to 900 and 1,100 RMB/m³ respectively, driven by improved arrival quality and restocking demand. Taicang Port saw moderate increases but weak end-demand, creating a "quoted but unsold" scenario.

Takeaway for wood packaging buyers: While Canadian lumber may boost overall supply, premium no-knot grades have already led the price rally. Consider locking in ordinary-grade material costs now before further hikes spread.
